LIGHT
Whether natural or as a result of human ingenuity, light surrounds us and also reflects our many moods. In this series of dimmed lamps, I used the light that they create as a harbinger of the vital light that leaves the eyes of people suffering from dementia. I experienced this firsthand with my late mother who recently died of Alzheimer. This series of photographs serves to honour her memory and shine a light on this devastating disease.

YEARS REIMAGINED

In the words of American photographer Peter Liepke, “In a
world that is far from perfect, I am far more interested in the
aspect of showing the viewer what could be instead of what
is.” Joy Kardish agrees wholeheartedly that holding true to
this vision of what could be is fundamental to this body of
work.

As Kardish enters her fifth decade of producing photographic art, she reflects once again on life reimagined. Driven by a desire to reveal the world as she sees it in its ephemeral beauty, this collection of photographs marries simple life objects with a flair for giving them new life, and by extension, new meaning. Each piece is the result of countless hours in the refuge of her darkroom; they combine a variety of different 19th century processes she has come to favour for their ability to illustrate the emotion she feels when creating them. She blends these historic processes, including platinum
palladium, bromoil, photo gravure and silver gelatin in a
multitude of ways, relishing the distinct and unpredictable
outcomes they produce.
